Hey Anxiety Warriors!
Managing anxiety symptoms:
Let’s talk about those pesky physical sensations that come along with anxiety attacks – you know, the heart racing, the sweaty palms, the shortness of breath. It can be tough to deal with, but remember, you’ve got this! Here are three tips to help you calm down when those anxiety symptoms hit:
Breathe Deeply: When anxiety takes hold, take slow, deep breaths. Inhale for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale for four. Focusing on your breath can help slow your heart rate and ease tension. Shallow breathing tricks the body into a fight or flight response. This can trigger an anxiety attack, believe me, I know! Deep breathing into your under belly and releasing the breath slowly, helps alot.
Ground Yourself: Bring your attention back to the present moment. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique: Name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. It helps anchor you when anxiety tries to carry you away.
Positive Self-Talk: Challenge those anxious thoughts with positive affirmations. Remind yourself that you are strong, capable, and this feeling will pass. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones to regain control.
Which tips work? I use the breathing technique very frequently, not only for stressful situations, but also the quiet moments as well. I have alot of anxiety just before going to bed! Positive self-talk helps a great deal, but it takes practise, and if you aren’t used to doing it will take a little time to learn.
